Do I need to know the password to unlock a PDF?

If the PDF only restricts printing or editing (no password needed to open it), no. If it requires a password just to open, yes — you'll be asked to enter it, and it's checked entirely on your device.

Is this meant for opening PDFs I don't have permission to access?

No — it's for removing restrictions on files you're already allowed to open, like a form you locked yourself or a document you have rights to.

Does removing a password affect the PDF's content or quality?

Usually not — restrictions are removed with no change to content. If we had to decrypt an open-password file without the right library support, pages are rebuilt from rendered images instead, which does trade away selectable text; the result screen tells you which happened.

Unlock PDF

Remove a PDF's editing restrictions, or the password it asks for when opening — for files you already have the right to access. Nothing is sent to a server, including the password.
